Travel Log - From Cairo to Cape Town
UPDATE FROM ARUSHA TANZANIA 15 MARCH 2006
Dear friends and family,
this letter comes to you from Arusha, where I just arrived this morning after leaving Nairobi. So far on the tour, i don't think i/'ve ever been as sad about leaving a city as I was about this place. While most travellers and people are weary of this city (dubbed "Nairobbery" by many), I had a marvelous time there and was really sad to leave. Not only did we have a wonderful time with my cousin Noreen and her family, whose warmth and hospitability were so helpful after the difficult times we have been having on the road but we also were welcomed with open arms by the Aga Khan Foundation East Africa and members of the Ismaili Council for Kenya and Narobi. Their reception when we arrived was just amazing, and they were so enthusiastic about our trip and about our experiences so far that it was a pleasure to meet them. We had a beautiful luncheon in Nairobi where we had a very pleasant tete-a-tete with them about our journey so far. They were so welcoming and generous, one can only wish that everyone would be as enthused about Pedal for Hope as they were (and for the most part, people really have been that supportive!).
In Arusha, the Tour D'AFrique is taking a couple of days off so that riders can take safaris. It would be crazy to imagine that we would all come to Africa and miss out on the quintessential "African" experience. I can't wait to see my first lions, elephants and giraffes NOT in captivity! I'll let you all know how that one goes. As for right now, i'm about to head off the see the Rwandan war crimes tribunal , which is located here in Arusha. As an IR student, this is one experience I really could not pass up and i cannot wait to see what it is like.
I'm going to keep this email short, something totally new for me, but there will be more to come!
Take care and love to all,
Ayesha
“Nairobi has been wonderful so far, not only because I get to finally see and spend time with our family, but also because the city is exciting, busy and lively and we get REAL beds, showers and delicious home-cooked food, plus the added sense of comfort not afforded by campgrounds” |
